Shared Baltic – does biodiversity matter for business?

The Baltic Sea is one of the shallowest and most polluted seas in the world. The Baltic Sea is surrounded by economically highly developed countries inhabited by nearly 100 million people. The economic and social progress of the last century has had a significant impact on the marine ecosystems of the Baltic region. The inflow of nutrients to the sea basin, overfishing and other forms of our economic activity, together with the observed climate changes, are not indifferent to the animals and plants found in the Baltic Sea.

The remarkable economic growth and population growth in the world are at the expense of the natural environment, which we exploit and transform for our own needs. The threats related to the loss of biodiversity are very common and are not taken into account by business. However, the pandemic has shown us how dependent we are on nature.

What role does business have to play in protecting and restoring the natural environment and ecosystems? Are companies already taking any steps, seeing that their future depends largely on nature's welfare? Do they incorporate natural risk aspects into their strategies and processes?
